for the Certificate of Medical Examination  WW1 a question is asked -

does above named person -
 'have traces of corporal punishment or evidence of having been marked with the letters D or BC' --

what 'traces' would be looked for and what do the letters D or BC stand for?

D for Desertion, BC for Bad Character. The traces would be of Flogging, although this was abolished in 1881.
