Just looking at his marriage in 1872 to see if age is given but just says of full age.

It also says that for Caroline - sorry Catherine on the marriage - but if she was born c1854  :-\

There is a Caroline age 8 with father Thomas Gregory in 1861 - her birthplace Stepney Middlesex same place as the marriage.

There is just no trace of any Padgetts is there - we have births and later years but what happened in between??

Very tricky  :-\

I had a look at the marriage witnesses Joseph and Maria Allpress, but they look likely to be on Catherine/Caroline’s side.  Joseph Allpress married Maria Gregory, 24 Sep 1860 St Thomas, Stepney.

Maria was a spinster, daughter of Thomas Gregory, coal heaver.

Witnesses: Joseph & Maria Allpress.

Just found Maria Gregory - sister of Caroline/Catherine married Joseph Allpress in 1860 and the names rang a bell as the witnesses you found.

Maria was the name of her mother as well - died 1859.

Maria Gregory is on the 1851 census age 9.

Looks like we had the same thoughts about the witnesses  :)

One possible lead: George Padget (the son b 1877) joined the Army on 16 July 1901 - birthplace Bromley Middx, but resident at 15 Cullum St, Stratford/West Ham.

Yes from different angles but same result = all good.

Kind of getting somewhere but long way to go...

15 Cullum St in the 1901 census is occupied by Edward and Sarah “Cannon” and family - in fact this (in disguise) is Sarah Ann nee Pagett b 1874, whose husband Edward gave his name as Canning when they married in 1895.
