Abbreviation on marriage register entry.
« on: Sunday 26 August 18 06:39 BST (UK) »
I have been using ancestry's free weekend to sort out some of my queries (and get a few new ones), and have found in 2 marriage entries in different churches, different years, the initials M.M just after one of the witnesses' name, who happens to be the father of the bride. His initials are J.A by the way
Can anyone shed some light on this?
The years are 1921, church is in Hoxton and 1926, in Clerkenwell.

Perhaps if you give us the names of the couples who married and when we can see for ourselves,  it is often easier for us that way

Hello everyone. I thought at first it could be Military Medal but haven't come across his military service
and as he signed his name, thought it couldn't stand for his mark.
The two entries are St Paul's Church, Clerkenwell  March 27, 1921 (not 1926 as previously written) John Richard Newport 21, and Eleanor Maud Plume, 23
and St John's the Baptist, Hoxton 20 June 1926 (not 1921 as previously written) Robert Francis Cockram and Florence Gertrude Plume.
Looking at it now, am wondering if witness was their brother, same names as their father, who did have military service but the writing of the name and initials looked different. So maybe I have answered my own question!
Thanks for your input, Jackie

Witnesses names are not recorded on marriage registers, only their signatures. So that is how he signed his name  ... could well be he liked to mention his Military Medal.
