Hearth Tax of Leicestershire.
« on: Sunday 26 August 18 12:15 BST (UK) »
Hello
How would one go about finding the Hearth Tax list for Leicestershire 1663/4?
I'm only able to find the Hearth list for the City of Leicester but I know there is also one for the county including villages/Hamlets/Towns taken in about 1663/1664.

Also looking for land deeds and grants pertaining to the Dudley family owning and purchasing land around Cosby/Odstone/Shackerstone and Swepstone around the 1600s mid 1700s, Ive tried Leicestershire Record office search function but nothing appears. Wills indicate purchasing and conveyance of land to Heirs.

I know that LRO has Hearth tax returns outside Leicester, I have a record for Thurcaston where two men have 2 hearths each.
This was many years ago, when I wasn't that precise in recording  :-[, I was still learning. . I entitled it under Lay Subsidy. 1646 or 1666. Hearth Tax. Followed by the 2 entries. So maybe look under Lay Subsidy for what you want? Sorry it's a bit vague but hope it might be helpful somehow.

The best way to find out what is at the LRO is probably to email them and ask.

Meanwhile, these files are held at TNA ...

Thank you, I’ll email LRO and see what they say.

I did type in Hearth in the advanced search option but nothing appeared, I’m sure an email will give me more information.

Have sent you 2 PM's sorry nothing for Swepstone . Information from Medieval Village Notes cd Domesday Survey 1066 to Hearth Tax 1666. Can't see anything in the name of Dudley but hope you find it helpful.

Thank you very much for this, I was hoping that aside from Cosby there was Dudley mentioned in the hearth tax return for Odstone and Shackerstone. My 11th grt grandfather is Henry Dudley Esq of Odstone. I would have thought he would be present somewhere as he is possibly also the Lieutenant Henry Dudley present in Leicestershire during the civil war. I would have liked to have seen how many hearths he had.

I notice you also have Fowkes in your name interests.
Maybe these are the same as the ones I descend from.
The Fowkes of elmesthorpe and Rothley.

I descend from Rebecca Fowkes daughter of John Fowkes and Ann Paul (Ann Paul being a descendant of Sir Thomas Halford, 2nd baronet of Wistow Hall)

Yes my husband also from Richard Fowkes of Rothley  Richard was his 8 x great grandfather.
I do have quite a lot of information on the Elemesthorpe Fowkes about  the  land they rented and when and where they moved to etc.

If not too much trouble, I would very much like to see that information.

Was Richard the son of John Fowkes c.1675-1750 and Elizabeth Bywater 1693-1773?

Or the son of John Fowkes and Ann Paul?

I think Elizabeth’s brother Thomas Bywater, Gent, was in the possession of Rothley House or Hall according to his will? I’m not sure wether this was an inheritance or not but the Bywaters didn’t seem to have been lords of the manor of Rothley.
