Parents of Jessie Alexandria Blackler
« on: Sunday 26 August 18 12:40 BST (UK) »
Hello all, i wonder if you can help me find any further information regarding Jessie's parents?
Jessie Alexandria Blackler was baptised 30/11/1884 in Cathcart, her parents where John & Maria Blackler. Jessie & the family moved to Bulawayo & here she married into the Huntly family.
From death records i think Maria was born Maria Waiters appx 1848 european Scottish, she died 1905. There is a death record for a Charles John Alexander Blackler at Bulawayo in 1955 but that puts his dob at 1870. So not the dad but not sure if/how he is connected, could be a coincident.

I can see John as a Freemason registered at Lodge 2092 in 1885 previous to that he was at lodge 989.  I am trying to find out when they came to Cathcart & from where, i have a feeling the family originated in Devon England... but have no proof.

Hope you can help.

I see a death Notice for Maria on family search in 1904 https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QVBQ-Z93W

and a full DN at https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939N-CX9W-N3?i=114&cc=1837900&cat=496484 gives her maiden name as Watters. Looks like Charles John Alexander is her her eldest son also lists a number of other children . Also gives a death date for John as 4 March 1901 - cannot spot that one. There is an un-indexed collection of Zimbabwe death registers https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/496484?availability=Family%20History%20Library - I think an index will be published soon as we spent a while indexing these this year.

Scotlands People shows a Maria Watters (only one I could find) bp.25/11/1848 Aberdeen, daughter of Alexander Watters and Margaret McKenzie - this would tie in exactly.

Military records show a John Blackler, 25th Co. Royal Engineers, Sapper, no. 3144, was stationed at King Williams Town, Cape of Good Hope in 1861.

This could be your John but no other identifying records in transcription on FindMyPast.

Hello again! Right i think i have John, but how do i connect the dots?
i am matched on ancestry DNA to a person ( who doesn't answer messages) who has Jessie on her tree. (DNA 4th cousins) I have Blackler family originating from Devon. So i worked on the premise of the Blackler connection. My 4 x gg parents Richard John Blackler & Harriet Lee  from Bridford Devon had a son called John Blackler in 1835, i can't find him after the 1851 census & his age puts him around an age for marrying Maria. Any ideas on where to look for him?
