Any idea on when this was taken? All it says "Mammy" on the back
« on: Sunday 26 August 18 12:46 BST (UK) »
Hi, this is my first post and I'm hoping someone could help.
I'm trying to find out who this photo is of. All I know is that it says "Mammy" on the back.
I assumed it was my great grandmother, but I'm not sure if the dates would fit. To me it
looks like it was taken in the 1920s, which would make her in her 70s but I'm not sure if
she looks that old. We do have family who didn't go grey, so maybe it makes her look younger?
I'm not sure when she died, I've found a couple of people who could be her with very different dates of death.
Also, how common would it have been to have a snapshot taken in the
1920s? Thanks very much.

Hi,
Great Grandma Ahern, what was her first name?
If she died in the UK I will see if I can find her.

Hi Maggsie,
Her name was Margaret Ahern (various spellings) nee Loughrey. She was born in Dublin in 1845 and, as far as I know, died in Ireland.
Thanks for your interest,
Marie.

Sorry Marie,
I should have asked what was her youngest child year of birth, then I can search from that year.
Ireland records are online up to 1917 births and other years are if you are lucky!

Hi Maggsie,
As far as I can find my grandad was her youngest. He was born in Dublin in April 1888, his name was Joseph Francis Ahern. I have found them in the workhouse when he was a baby, and him in the Artane Industrial School, but am not sure what happened to her after the workhouse.
Thanks,
Marie.

Hi, Ok, this is his birth
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1888/02517/1932930.pdf
it wasn't in the Workhouse, it looks like Mary L, or Mary pl  so Mary Lane or place or some where.
It says the father Joseph was a Waiter.
Present at birth was a Matilda Clancy I think she is the area midwife as I have seen her name a few times.
Did they have another son called Maurice?

Please note.....
There is a birth in the workhouse in 1888 for a John Ahern, no father, mother Margaret Ahern.

Yes, that's him. Thanks for the information about Matilda Clancy, I had found her previously as his sponsor. I think he was a few months old when they were in the workhouse. Yes, he had an older brother called Maurice.

Marie.

Hi,
I found a Maurice born about 1879/80, in 1901 census in hospital he was a clerk.
this is the link
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai003773117/
Number 36 on the list.
I don't know if he is your Maurice.
There is a death for a Margaret Ahern in 1907 in Harolds Cross. (A Hospice) aged 50, but they guessed in those days. My Husbands Great Aunt, on her death it said she was 64, she wasn't she was 57.

I would say the photo is more 1930's. I have a similar one of my Gt Grandmother b 1889, with the same style dress and hair, which I know was taken in the early 1930's.
I think these kind of snapshot photos were quite common by then
