Help with Latin on a marriage allegation
« on: Monday 27 August 18 13:05 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to find the parents of Jane Povah who married Richard Hinton in 1706, I've found the marriage allegation which names a Robart Povah and Thomas Povah, I don't think either of these are her father, possibly they could be brothers

part of the allegation is in Latin which I've tried translating but I wondered if anyone could take a look to see if anything points to their relationship with Jane

My Latin is too rusty to give you a full translation, but I read it as:
Robert Povall of Whitchurch in the county of Shropshire, tailor, and Thomas Povall of Whitchurch aforesaid in the county aforesaid, weaver.

No indication of a relationship.

Philip
Please help me to help you by citing sources for information.

The extract is actually from a marriage bond.

Only the upper three lines are relevant to the people involved.  The lower section identifies the churchman to whom they are bound and sets out certain standard conditions of the bond.

Philip has everything from the upper section.  There's definitely no relationship here.

Two points to follow up:

First, the marriage allegation is less formal than the bond and often gives a little more information about the parties.  An allegation will usually specify a relationship when one of the parties is a minor.

So it's worth reading the allegation if you can lay hands on it easily.

Secondly, I agree with Philip that the surnames are Povall, not Povah.
