When I was searching for my family I came across a boarder at a neighbours house whom the transcriber had listed as being a "murgecal sterdent".  I was so intrigued I had to investigate even though no connection to my family.  Turns out he was a medical student.

 ::) :o ;D
Seemingly someone who worked in the pottery industry,removing the things that I fired pots were put into the kiln in and which needed to be emptied after the  firing.
Was on a Wilfred Pickles Have a Go programme .late 1940 ‘s or early 50’s.

Saggar Maker's Bottom Knocker is a "genuine" occupation in the Potteries area of Staffordshire - NOT a "transcription" attempt.  :)

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

I am well aware of that.
My point was what would the transcribers make of such a complicated
occupation when a relatively simple one could be so mixed up?
I did not submit it as a transcription error,I wrote “I wonder what they would make of”
The previous errors of transcription were all  of genuine occupations too.

Strange: I always thought a sagger must be one of those conical things that bends over when a certain temperature is reached (so by looking through a window in the kiln you can tell when the pots are nicely baked).  Wikipedia confirms what you say, Viktoria.  Learn something every day on this forum.

If you put "Saggar Maker" into the "Keyword" section for the census returns on either Ancestry or FindMyPast, there are a large number of entries, although I can't readily see any for 1841.
