I feel bad - I'm already back for help.

It's asking me to give his exact date of death (the exact day as well as month and year).

Unfortunately, I only know the month and year. I don't know what day he died on.

This info seems to be required for ordering a certificate.

Ah yes.  That will be because it is less than 50 years ago so they have a stricter policy on ordering.  Unfortunately he doesn’t seem to have left a will, as the probate index is a good source for exact death dates: https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/#wills (I had a quick look and couldn’t see him there).

Presumably you only know the quarter of registration (e.g. Dec qtr which is 1 Oct  to 31 Dec) rather than the month of the death? Registration is of course not the same event as death.

I am about to go offline but others may have ideas about how to get around this.

Regarding the death certificate, your best bet in the absence of knowing the death date is simply to write to the GRO with the information you have and the required fee.
