New York census look up for 1890
« on: Tuesday 28 August 18 19:23 BST (UK) »
Hello

Ann Penrose Dale was born in 1847 in Sand Hutton, Yorkshire, England. I was able to find her on the U.K censuses for 1851, 1861 and 1871.  In 1872 she married Joseph Mountain in Leeds, Yorkshire and then she seemed to disappear from U.K records. Then last night just by chance I found her on a grave web-site and from there the 1880 U.S.A census.
From this I could deduct she arrived in America around  1874-76. The census gave the following details:- Joseph Mountain, age 31 a coffee & Tea merchant; Ann age 30;Lydia, age 7; Charles age 4 and Alice age 9months.  Anna (D.1910) and Joseph (D.1903) are buried in Mount Hope Cemetery in Monroe, Rochester, New York

As well as asking if anybody has anymore information on Ann Penrose Mountain I would also like to ask about John Penrose Dale, born 1850 in Sand Hutton, Yorkshire and appeared on the U.K 1851, 1861, 1871 and 1881 census before he disappeared and Frederick Penrose Dale born 1853 in York, Yorkshire and only appeared on the 1861 U.K census before disappearing.. Did they join Anne?

Thank you
Louise

There is no 1890 census, but there is a 1892 NY state census.

They appear on that in Rochester.

AGED WOMAN FOUND DEAD
_____________________

Lies Down in Bed and Insets
Tube Between Her Teeth

Mrs. Anna Mountain, 60 years old, was found dead in bed at her home, No. 394 1/2 Joseph avenue yesterday. Rubber gas tubing; was gripped between her teeth, indicating that the woman had deliberately taken her own life. The body was removed to the morgue, and Coroner T. A. Kllllp began an investigation. It is probable that he will give a certificate  of suicide while suffering from melancholia.

The strong odor of gas was first noticed by Edward Then, a clerk, who traced it to the flat occupied by Mrs. Mountain. He forced the door and saw the woman lying on the bed. He opened the windows and shut off the gas that was flowing through the tube. A physician was summoned, who said the woman had been dead for several hours. Mrs. Mountain is said to have been the mother of ten children, none of whom lived with her.

Here is the family in 1900 census. The last name mis-transcibed. Census states they immigrated in 1874.

Thank you for all that hard work and information. I have followed the links and opened an account with the web-site. I didn't know it existed and now I know it is there I will explore it.  Saying that I would never have found the mis-transcribed census records.  It was a horrible to read that she killed herself as that is what her father did in England (he hung himself) just before she disappeared from the U.K records and as I now know went to America.
