Loperwood House, Eling

Hi. My ancestors William and Martha Godwin were living at Loperwood House with their baby daughter in 1861. William was footman and Martha was a maid. I am tying myself in knots trying to find out who they were working for, every census I find seems to list the gardeners, cooks etc but no mention of the owners. Does anyone know about this family please?

In the Hampshire Advertiser 30 November 1861 there is a birth announcement -

On the 21st instant, Loperwood House Mrs H.S.R Pearce, a son.

A search for that Pearce family may help.

Another article in 1867 mentions Henry Stanley Robert Pearce, Loperwood House.

Death -

Henry Stanley Robert Pearce late of Loperwood Manor
Death Date - 6 Dec 1868

The name has now evolved to a manor rather than a house.

Yay - brilliant! Thank you, I didn't know where to look. It makes much more of a story to know who my ancestors were working for.

The Medical Directory for 1873 shows H S R Pearce, MRCS, living at Loperwood House.

Surprised to see that he would still be included in the 1873 Medical Directory as he died in 1868.

Henry Stanley Robert Pearce's widow (Emily, Loperwood Manor) remarried 25 October 1871 to George Waterhouse, 12th Bengal Cavalry.

Emily Waterhouse, age 39,  died 6 Nov 1876.
