As I was browsing new threads with the symbols /characters kept popping up.

I saw those as well, I daresay the friendly scammers were back after a short period away.  Lobby this happens every now and then, they are reported and get removed.

Yes all is well when I log on and off.  ;D

This happened around 8.30-8.45 this morning UK time. Several threads started on Armed Forces with symbol headings and when I opened one (in great trepidation) it had a large paragraph of charcters/symbols. As I said I reported to moderator, and I would assume others may have done the same. The threads disappeared around 9am.

Looby :)

No, RootsChat isn't hacked. :)

It's simply that spammers register and start posting their spam.

These can then quite quickly build up as the ''Latest Posts".

Also, for those of you who have set up to get email notifications for new topics on a board, you will get a new email notification too.

Quite often, by the time you then log in, these posts will not be there as a moderator has removed them and the spammer blocked. This is what happened in this case too.

There are systems in place to reduce the number of spammers, but as you can see, some do get through from time to time.

Have to say, when these people post, the Mods do a great job, but Mods can't be on 24 hours a day, and that is when these posts stay on the page for a little while, until a Mod can wave their magic wand. :D
