Black ancestors in Liverpool/Lancashire
« on: Saturday 01 September 18 20:15 BST (UK) »
Maybe this can be of help to those researching black ancestry in or around Liverpool.
Discovered the following remarkable entry while looking for ancestors' baptisms:

THOMAS, John
DoB approx 1792
Bapt 20 April 1808
Note "a Black, about sixteen years old"

TD
Haycock (Liverpool, Wolverhampton, Oswestry); Rosewell (Shepperton); Wales/Whales (Thanet, Kent); Daborn (Chobham, Horsell); Prince and Powell (Liverpool area); Maxted and She(e)pwashe (Kent); Milo/Millot (France, Holland, England); genealogical research project on links to ancient Frisian aristocracy (Hofstra-Fynia-Tania). It keeps me off the streets ;)

"I remember noticing that St James Toxteth has baptisms of black people c1780s."

Did you find any names which were different/didn't seem British (to share)?

They may be on the 1841 onwards?

This reminds me of a couple many yrs ago, both blond(e) who had a child of mixed 'looking' race, dark hair/skin which may have been a 'throwback' from ancestors?

Kettering, Northampton:- MacKinnon

Canada:- Callaghan, Cumming, MacPhee

I did find one more, based on an article on the Internet.

Baptism: 10 Sep 1783 St James, Toxteth, Lancashire, England
Peter Sailsbury -
    Abode: from Baltimore, Maryland
    Notes: Negro

Apparently there was a community of freed slaves working as sailors who ended up in Liverpool.
Intriguing.

Do you think this is your ancestor?

I assume there were no names of parents other than surname?

Possibly Illegitimate  :-\

No, not mine.

Just thought I'd post this for those that are looking into theirs.

Here are the St James Toxteth records that I mentioned I found. I don't think any of my ancestors were black but I do have ancestors from the Toxteth area hence my looking at the baptisms in this church:-

Freed slaves probably had the names of their masters (eg Cassius ClaY ::), so, unless described as black, not identifiable. There were a lot of black Africans in Britain usually with English names. Often forgotten, but the Army, regular infantry and cavalry, Militia and Yeomanry all had bands including black musicians. Super uniforms to impress the mob. Queen Victoria put a stop to it on Accession in 1837. She thought it demeaned Blacks. Fine, but what happened to them? Did they get decent pensions?

This watercolour is by CCP Lawson from the 1960's I think. Don't know whether his books are in or out of copyright now. it's the band, or part of it, of the Bucks Militia 1790.
