Royal Navy Reserves Records Abbreviations Help Please
« on: Sunday 02 September 18 17:12 BST (UK) »
Good afternoon - I am trying to work out what some abbreviations mean on a First World War Royal Navy Record of Service.  I have come across a number of abbreviations that might be RO02 or Ru02 - and RO053 OR Ru053.  Please see the attachments.  Are my interpretations correct or not?
And can anyone tell me what they mean or where I can look to find out what they mean?
Thank you.

Greetings, and a warm welcome to Rootschat.

If you could give us some context it would help us find answers.
 - Are the notations in a column and, if so, what is the column header?
 - Are they part of a sentence and, if so, what does the full sentence say?

I usually start with http://www.naval-history.net/xDKCas1005-Abbreviations.htm, but there is nothing obvious on there.

All the best
Philip

I am researching a Stanley Wotzel, who is indentured as an apprentice into the Merchant Marine in 1907, passes his second and first mate certificates. Then at the start of 1916 is commissioned into the Royal Navy Reserve, by 23/3/16 he has disappeared!!!
From the service record (quite sparse) that I obtained from the National Archives, I have the following:-
Under heading “date” 20/1/16 and “miscellaneous”  Ru 02 and birth certificate
And further down Ru 053 + orders
Under heading “date of application” and “nature of application” Ru 053 “Excellent” 5/2/1

These are forms associated with the Royal Naval Reserve.
RV2 is his Certificate of Enrollment  in the RNR. RV53 is a call up form.
'Excellent' in this case being HMS.

Lovely thank you.  Is there an RV 01 and Rv 055?  If so what do they signify?  Thank you.

Thank you Philip - A lot of those forms deal with R.N.R. administration and i doubt a complete list survives.

Apologies for jumping in on this thread! ;D

I am looking at a RNR form for John Bridson, born 1857, Douglas, Isle of Man.

Where is says "No. of previous R.V.2" are 3 numbers:
73991, 85055 and 9296.

Can I therefore assume that he got a different RV2 number on each assignment to RNR?
Are there likely to be other records available to me?
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Yes that's correct a new RV2 for every term (5 years). Try searching TNA on those numbers.
