? on address
« on: Sunday 02 September 18 17:37 BST (UK) »

I wonder if anyone can solve a problem please
My x 2 great grand parents have a second baby daughter called mary in 1872.
The address given as place of birth is 1 FARMERS COTTAGES, LAMBETH. yet the mothers address is given as 18 RATHBONE PLACE, LAMBETH. Could the cottages be a old hospital?. I really cant find the cottages address anywhere.    ??? :o :-*

The mothers address is at the time of registration of the birth.  They could have moved since the birth.

There is no Farmers Cottages on the 1871 street index, which is derived from the 1871 census. http://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/+/http://yourarchives.nationalarchives.gov.uk/index.php?title=Place:Lambeth_Registration_District,_1871_Census_Street_Index_C-F

The closest name on the index is Farnham Cottages  :-\ on the census they are actually called Farnhams Cottages, numbers 1 and 2. ( RG 10 / 652 / 20 / 33)

My grandmother went home to her mother for the births of two of my aunts so I am not at all surprised by a difference in addresses.

At a guess it sounds like a group of cottages that predated the development of the area. Despite being incorporated into later street numbering she just used the original address.

Hi

Don't forget that a row of cottages could just be named as such, in a longer road but not numbered as such.

They may not be named as eg      # 1,2,3,4,5 Elvis Cottages, Presley Road
but eg [ now ] 181 ( - 185 ) Presley Road.
