Welcome to Rootschat, Winmills.
I'm no expert but my reply will send it up the board and hopefully get some attention from those who are. My uneducated guess would be say 1912-1915 - but wait for the experts.

I wouldn't disagree with that. May even be up to WW1.

I did find more info on Alice Ashcroft. She was born in 1826 in Orrell, Lancashire and died in 1906 in Adlington. Here is another photo of her in her old age , and looking at her facial features and comparing her to the three women ,I believe the young girl to be Alice at a young age. I don't know yet who the other two women are at this point.   Thank You for all your comments.  It's not often that people would include their dog in a portrait, I would think .

2 comments & 1 question.
It's always best to put photos in colour.
This looks 1890's.
What dog?

Winmill, I’d suggest reexamining and discarding the idea of the girl in the group photo being the lady in the other photo.

The photo of the elderly lady was taken by R B Gilpin who was a photographer in Bolton and Gladcliffe in the 1890s, so that looks about right to be a 70-ish Alice (who lived within a few miles of those places) in that photo. The photo-within-the-photo may have been of someone who had recently died.

The group photo was taken about 20 years later, perhaps in the mid 1910s, so the girl in that photo was likely born in the 1900s.

If there is a relationship between the girl in the group photo and Alice in the other photo it could be that Alice is the girl’s great-grandmother, and the group photo could be of three generations: child, mother, grandmother - but that’s just speculation on my part.

Regarding the presence of the dog, it was actually quite common to put pets or toys into family photos.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Peter
