Thankyou so much Mckha489 for all your work on my behalf. ;D  I did find the article on Papers Past
re the attack by natives, sounds quite terrifying for Mrs. Brothers.  I assumed that may have been
the reason for the return home but the Colonial Secretary's papers seem to confirm the dismissal
of Brothers.  In the light of events in March 1845 in BOI their return to Aust. was fortuitous.

No, Greenwood has no connection to the family and yes the surname is difficult to search as you have found Mckha!  ::)

Your link to the French Catholic fathers in Russell is relevant as the family was Catholic, this
is another avenue for research.

The archive results are of great interest, particularly his dismissal from the gaol and his deposition
re the native robbery.  I would like to read their content but it appears that no copying costs are available for these records.

Thanks again,
Jen.

Thankyou for your continued interest JM :D  this search for births/baptisms will not be an easy one,
I note there is a museum in Russell, perhaps contact with them may shed some light on the
possibility of church records for the timeframe 1840-1845.

Regards,
Jen.

I think if you start a new topic “NZ Archives look up”  and post the link to those docs someone might be able to go and look at them for you. I think paying for copies is likely to be expensive

Hello Janette,   The items of interest were found on Archway online index to N.Z. Govt. archives
                       record series 8333, for Johnstone/Johnson Brothers c.1840-1982.

They are Colonial Secretary's inward correspondence from Russell, Bay of Islands
1844.  The records I would like to read are attached below with details of the record.

Jen.

Thanks Mckha for your advice re Archives look-up and also your link to J. Brothers' replacement,
much appreciated.

Have also noted on the NZ BMD website -  that Births, Deaths and Marriages were originally part
of the Colonial Secretary's Office.  Do you know if any of these records would have survived and if
so where to find them? ???

Jen.
