Osborn to Natal, then Broughton to Canada, then back to Natal
« on: Tuesday 04 September 18 17:08 BST (UK) »
This is my first venture into the Canada forum of Rootschat, and I have to admit I'm struggling just a bit!  Any help would be appreciated.

Setting the scene:
Henry Kennett OSBORN (b: 1853, Cork, Ireland) married Marie Alberta Eugene COX (b: 1856, Bath, Somerset, UK) at Saint Thomas a Becket Church, Bath, UK; on 2 June 1879.  We (my wife & I) have an on-line copy of the Marriage Certificate.

The young couple move to Newport, south Wales, UK where their first child is born: Elizabeth Annie Osborn on 11 March 1880.  We hold an on-line copy of the record of baptism at St. John the Evangelist, Monmouthshire.

The 1881 UK census shows the family at 8 Clarence Place, Newport, Monmouthshire [Caution: For some reason Henry Kennett OSBORN has been transcribed as Robert Kenneth OSBORN, whilst his wife, daughter & sister-in law are attributed with their correct first names]

Shortly thereafter their second child was born: John Victor OSBORN on 11 December 1881, we hold an on-line copy of the Record of Baptism at St. John's, Maindee, Monmouthshire.

Over the next few years eight further children are born: four at Estcourt, Natal, South Africa and four at Ladysmith, Natal.  We hold on-line copies of all eight records of baptism.

Their first child: Elizabeth Annie is not heard of again until the Canadian Census of 1921 when she appears in Minto, Comox, British Columbia, with a husband: BROUGHTON, Brian Delves and three daughters: Cecilia Dorothy(7), Lucy Margaret(5) & Joan Christine(3) and a note showing that Elizabeth first entered Canada in 1912.

We have now back tracked and can find no trace of Brian & Elizabeth's marriage, nor can we find any trace of birth records or baptism's of the three daughters.  We're obviously 'doing something not quite right' and would appreciate some help tracking down full dates and locations/ venues for these four events.  Insofar as the three daughters are concerned later documents simply show their place of birth as: Canada.

Closure:
Four years later, November 1925, the mother dies at New Westminster, B. C. and a further four months later March 1926, the father dies also at New Westminster, B. C.  Sixteen/seventeen months later the three sisters are seen, apparently un-escorted, en-route to Southampton on board Canadian Pacific, S.S. Montnairn and six days after landing the girls are on-board Union Castle Mail Line's, S.S. Balmoral Castle en-route to Port Natal where the G/parents live, and several Aunts & Uncles are bringing up families of their own.

Quite an interesting story!  And  ..  ..  ..  as above, if anyone can discover the dates of and the venues of the parents marriage and the sisters three dates and locations of birth, that would be exceedingly helpful.

Regards, JohnG_Swansea, south Wales, UK.

Thank you Sandra,

A very speedy reply.

As the image is a little on the small side at 391 x 187 pixels, I'm struggling with the date, it looks as if it could be: thirteenth September nineteen hundred and twelve.

Thank you.

Birth indexes/records for BC for that period do not look to be available online, you're not doing anything wrong.

Brian's will is available online:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01mno/
(page 151 if it doesn't link directly).

He leaves his money in trust for his daughters, and appoints Alice Ringrose of Comox as the guardian of his daughters.  Alice is living near the Broughton family (same page) in 1921. It appears Alice dies in British Columbia in 1956 (divorced): https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FLRJ-41W

Some newspaper records for the Broughton family:
Jan 1926, the three girls in Minto school:

July 1926, the three girls in Minto school:

August 1927, mention of them leaving:

Thank You jorose,

It never ceases to amaze me how responsive and helpful members of RootsChat are.

I should have realised for myself that the three dates of birth were likely to have been hidden behind an embargo, which here in the UK is set at 100 years, and yet the two pages of the will are already in the daylight.

Reading the the three editions of the local newspaper gives an interesting insight into community newspapers of the day.

Thank you for your assistance.
