Occupation Foreign Correspondent
« on: Thursday 06 September 18 07:29 BST (UK) »
Hello
I hope someone can help me.
I see someone who worked for the large engineering firm Vickers being described as a foreign correspondent.  I immediately think of them being a reporter but what would it mean in this situation? Was that name given to people who dealt with overseas companies/clients?  Would they speak several languages etc?
Thank you for any help.

Lancashire Evening Post 18 June 1919  has an piece about a bankruptcy of someone at Vickers who was a Foreign Correspondent Secretary.   Makes me think your surmise (re languages and overseas clients) is correct.

Lloyd's List 01 June 1906  has an advertisement by a gentleman looking for work as a correspondent he is fluent in french and german and has thorough shipping and mercantile experience.

there are a number of similar advertisements

Thank you both.  That answers my question perfectly. I saw also the man who was bankrupt had produced a France-Russian dictionary.
