Jane Roberts b c 1854 Llaniestyn
« on: Thursday 06 September 18 19:16 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone, I am looking for help in tracking down more information on my Great Grandmother, Jane Roberts.

I can trace her from her marriage to Thomas Turner on the 24th January 1874, in Denio,Pwllheli. I can see her in the 1881, 1891, 1901 and 1911 census returns, I also have a copy of her death certificate from 1916.

Where I am struggling is finding where she was prior to her marriage in 1874. The marriage certificate shows that her father was a William Roberts, Labourer. One of the witnesses to the marriage is a John Roberts, possibly a relative of Jane.  I know from census returns that she was born in Llaniestyn.

I am trying to establish Jane's mother's name, so I can hopefully then order her parents marriage certificate and possibly find a birth certificate for Jane.

I cannot find Jane in the 1861 Census. I have a possibility in the 1871 returns, a William, Ellen and Jane at Lleyn Street, Pwllheli.

Any help finding her parents would be greatly appreciated.

I missed it first time round, but parts of the 1861 census are missing, including Denio,Pwllheli.Perhaps, unfortunately, that is where they were.

In my opinion the family I have identified in 1851 are consistent with a marriage of Dec qtr 1838 between William Roberts and Ellinor Jones, given by NorthWalesBMD as in Llaniestyn.I would urge you to consider subscribing at least for a single month(£5) to www.yffor.com where this area is considered in detail.

Thank you Roger and thank you Suz, that is really useful. I had not noticed the John next door. I will look at that.

I will subscribe to the yffor site too at the weekend.

Thanks again for your great assistance, I do appreciate it.

Best wishes

If you are subscribing to Yffor.com you will find William Roberts baptism in Llaniestyn. Roberts was patronymic. Unfortunately records for Llangwndal only cover the period 1813-1959 and it appears Ellin was born around 1810.

....and,interestingly,in the 1841 census I believe he may be listed in the non-patronymic form William Jones!,with his son William "following suit".

THere is some evidence that Elinor(1810) may be listed under Tydweiliog.
