thanx for your quick response, I would like things like was he on ships , according to his medals he seemed to have got around a bit , for a wee guy to join the army as a trainee driver he fairly got around the world , but what did he do , where did he go ,I only know what is on the paper work but not what he did. and I do not understand it..

He was a driver in the RFA.

He started in the Royal Artillery (field branch) but in 1941 transferred to the Maritime Royal Artillery, hence all the pictures on ships with navy mates.

His record is very unforthcoming about which vessels he served on.  You could Google for Maritime Royal Artillery to get an idea of what he did, here's one to start:

Look closely at any photos you may be able to decipher names of ships on  his mates caps

That was the wartime way of hiding ship's names from the enemy!

Note specifically his Atlantic Star and Arctic Star, the latter for the Russian convoys, medals almost exclusively for men at sea.
