DNA Testing
« on: Friday 07 September 18 18:47 BST (UK) »
Hi all
I'm pondering on taking a DNA test to see if it brings anything up on my ancestry.  I was wondering if any one has taken a DNA test and if it has helped you on your family research. Which company did you use for the testing Any comments  for or against would be welcome

On the whole, I've been pleased  that I took the test. I've been able to identify more cousins, but the best thing is that I've managed to find who my maternal great grandfather was.

You have to work hard to investigate your 'matches' and link to your tree. The test doesn't replace thorough genealogical research.

Ancestry has now topped 10 million in it's database.

If someone tests with Ancestry, are there any restrictions to viewing your  results if you do not have a current subscription?

Some people have had great success with their DNA results, others not.

Which test are you considering taking?

DNA results can be very complex to get your head around and perseverence is generally required to understand and make sense of your results. It can be frustrating if you know there is a match with someone but you can't find it. Also frustrating that it is sometimes/often the case that matches do not reply if you contact them in an attempt to find your common ancestor.

If you take the test not expecting too much you might be pleasantly surprised. A good paper trail is almost a prerequisite to success.

Yes, you can see your results, and use shared matches, you can contact matches.
You can't see trees, or do any searches of the data sets.
Which is why I don't care if people have trees or not because I can't see them anyway.
As long as people are willing to respond to messages I manage fine.

You can download your rawDNA and upload it to other sites.

To get the most of your DNA results it is better to have a subscription, though not essential.

You can view matches, view shared matches, search surnames and places in common, contact them through DNA messaging service and see a simplified tree without a subscription.

You cannot message them through usual messaging service or see their full tree.

How do you see a simplified tree?
