Given that “Howley” cropped up on the baptism, you might want to look at Ann Howley (28 b Stockport) in Cowell’s Buildings, Ardwick in 1871.  She is an unmarried mother of 9yo William (middle initial looks like L, but that could be an error) and John, 20 months.

As you suggested earlier, I will order the birth certificate and hopefully confirm.

You’re welcome.  As you probably know, the cheapest way to get the certificate information is to order a PDF for £6 through the current GRO Online pilot service:

Have you found his baptism record?

One of mine was illegitimate but his baptism record names his father

Thanks, I just ordered now so I will be back once I have the certificate.  :) I didn't know that PDF options were available, in the past I've just ordered a paper copy so thank you for letting me know!

I have just ordered a copy of the baptism now, so will find out soon!  :) Im hoping his Father will be mentioned.

Just an update.

The certificate did not mention a Father at all.

His mother's name is Ann Earley.
