Electoral Registers for Tipperary - 1920s and 1930s
« on: Saturday 08 September 18 01:45 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am researching relatives who, at an educated guess, may have moved to Tipperary from London in the early 1920s  - to escape the attentions of the law as it happens - and lived there until the mid 1930s when they re-emerge in England.  It is more a hunch than an educated guess even, but the family had historical roots in Tipperary and it is a lead worth following.  At this stage, I don't have precise information on whereabouts in Tipperary the family's historical roots were centred.

My sense is that the Electoral Registers covering Tipperary from the early 1920s to the mid 1930s would be a good place to search, assuming that they have survived.  My relatives used a variety of names over the years in the interests of covering their tracks, so there would be a fair bit to search, but it is a start.

So my question is - have the Electoral Registers for the whole of Tipperary survived?  And if so, any advice on where and how they could be accessed would be appreciated.  If they are only available by local area within Tipperary that would be good to know too, as I will have to focus my attention on finding better information on their precise historical roots within the County to narrow the search down.

Cheers

Hi PeterProg,
Records???
Names would help, as a start to anyone to search.
County Tipperary had 2 Ridings up to about 2012, now the county town is Nenagh.
Tipperary North, county town of Nenagh and Tipperary South county town of Clonmel. Division was about the Thurles area.
So name first please.

Hi Maggsie

Thanks for getting back and for the information.  As I say, they were pretty flexible with names.

During the 1920s and 1930s they used the surnames Webb, Brodie and Webb-Brodie at different times.  They seemed to have settled on Webb-Brodie by the time they returned to England permanently in 1937, and were just Brodie when they left England in 1922 or 1923.

The wife was nearly always Emily, but the husband used many different first names throughout his life.

I cannot be sure they were in Tipperary for the whole of this approximately fifteen year period, but I am pretty confident they were there for a good part of it.  An educated guess would be that they were located in or around the Clonmel area in the south of the county, but again I cannot be sure of that at this stage.

Cheers
