Many thanks for all replies. Ernest had to have been born before his mother died in 1835 if my informant is correct!  Yes he was connected to my original posting about Thomas Bowthorpe who turned out to be William!  Have looked for Ernest under different name but am unable to find anything!  He will probably turn up one day!

Have you looked at the information already provided on the thread about William Bowthorpe (snr)ís natural son Ernest William Bowthorpe GOOK born 1891?  He is a match for the age of Ernest BOWTHORPE found as a soldier in 1911 in the Norwich Regiment, the correct regiment for the Ernest Bowthorpe who died in 1917.  He also fits the criteria of having a father William and (half-) brothers named William and Charles.

However it was their mother, not his, who died in 1885.  This could be the glitch in your informantís information (the assumption that he must have been born by 1885 because Julia died then) which has prevented you finding his birth until now.

Would this be the marriage of the Ernest Bowthorpe that you are researching?

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1915/09826/5568014.pdf

The name and occupation of Ernest Bowthorpe's father ties in with the census and details of the Gook/Bowthorpe household.

National Schools register has Ernest Gook with father's name William, residence Sun Lane (same as the 1901 for William Bowthorpe) Ernest's date of birth is recorded as 19 Aug 1891.

Ernest died in WW1. Apparently he died of self inflicted wounds. Does anyone know where I can find this information please
