Jonathan Green - 6th Dragoon Guards Carabiners
« on: Saturday 08 September 18 21:07 BST (UK) »
I am trying to get info on Corporal Jonathan Green  who died in Meerut in 1857

I would like help finding his service record, where he was based and how he died in Meerut 15th June

He married Ann Messinger

I believe Jonathan and Ann had a child in Meerut, and after Jonathans death, Ann re married Sgt Joseph Layton

Any info would be appreciated

Many Thanks

Russell Woodward

Per the burial register he died from Variola (which I think is smallpox)

Hi Shaun

That’s great info....is there any record of his enlistment at all, he was from Kent

I suppose disease was pretty common Smallpox

Have you come across a wedding in Meerut between Sgt Joseph Layton and Ann Green on 22 Dec 1857. It’s interesting that baptism of her son included both surnames Green and Layton before the marriage . so the question is who is the father

Regards

Russ

I would vote for the father being Jonathan Green unless there is evidence showing that Jonathan  senior died before circa March 1957 (or was not in the same location as Ann) when young Jonathan would have been conceived.  We may never know for certain, but I would go with the idea that Joseph Layton was friendly with the widow who honoured him by including Layton in the child's name.  (Friendship turned to love and they lived happily ever after?)

The baptism states son of Jonathan (deceased) and Ann.

Thank you all for your help on this

Jonathan was recorded as the father but died of Smallpox

Ann then married Joseph Layton before returning to UK

Are there any records or details that can be found of the travel to or from India?

Regards

Russell
