Thanks for the reply.
I found all those records and thought that they might follow each other in years but haven't studied them closely.
Was your grandfather single on marriage?
I presume you have his death - was he the one who died in 1935? The age is different again, I think so it makes it difficult for you.
Did you find the other death?

it took me a while to cross off the earsdon mcgonigal. He served in the 76th regiment, however, my grandfather served in the donegal artillery and the dates simply dont match. My grandad married emily olga clark in tynemouth in 1914.the other J.T.Mcgonigal had a family in the north east but my granddads army record clashes with the earsdon mcgonigal.I wish they did as my quest would be over. My granddads father was william Mcgonigal.I dont know his mothers name. All army records state he was born in shankill, belfast but as yet I cant find even a baptism record.I am wondering which records are not on line , knowing my luck so far, he was baptised in a church whose records are not digitalised yet.

A church of what religion??
Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

I had another look at the records but there is a big age difference.
If I have followed them properly, there is no overlap between army service.

If the service record were one person, JT would be born 1850ish.
There is a death in Tyneside 1935 - John T McGonigal  born abt 1851 which doesn’t fit with the one in 1911 or your man  :-\

Is your John T a bachelor on marriage?
Have you found him in 1911?

Belfast street directory for 1868 unfortunately doesn't show McGonigle as the address listed on the birth certs above but it does show a William O'Hare (And that is Martha's maiden name)

15. O'Hara, Wm., bleacher

and he isn't there in the 1877 directory

McClean, Kelly, Murray, Higgins, McAnulty (McNulty, Conalty, Kinolty), Morgan, Rafferty, McPolin (All Co Down, Ireland) Bowman, Hooper(Yorkshire)

Heywood, I only posted the above family as they had a father William and were in Belfast about 1864. I did wonder if possibly Martha had a son John Thomas O'hara before her marriage to William but haven't found one yet.
From what you say about there being no overlap in the service records for the JT's it's looking more likely that they were the same person.
If that is Olga remarrying in 1947 then John presumably died between 1914 and 1947, there seems to be only the one death for a John Mcgonigal between these years in Northumberland and that's the one  in 1935.

Chippybloke if you have the actual marriage certificate for John and Olga please could you post all the details?
