Looking for relatives who attended a funeral in the 1970's in Maesteg >>
« on: Monday 10 September 18 14:32 BST (UK) »
Long shot - I have very little info.

My gt grandfather died in the mid-1970's. He was buried in Maesteg Cemetery.

My gran has told me that female relatives from his side of the family from Cardiff attended the funeral.

To the best of our knowledge, we have no relatives there, so they are possibly descended from an Irish line that we've lost contact with.

His name was Nicholas Francis Whitty - I have contacted living Whitty's in Cardiff a few years ago (that I could find), but there was no success. I appreciate that the surname of these relatives may not be Whitty anymore, or indeed at that point in time.

There is also the possibility that they could be descended from the Connell/Connelly/O'Connell line (his mother).

Buckley - Maesteg, Tipperary
Lane - Waterford
Hughes - Hay/Hereford
Hobby - Byford
Evans - Neath/Cadoxton
Whitty - Wexford, South Wales
Connell - Ireland, and possibly Liverpool
White - Kinsale, Cork
Ahearn(?) - Glanmire, Cork
Millward - Merthyr, Maesteg

Helpful to have birthdate and correct year of death

He was born 25.3.1906 and died March 1978

Was he born in Ireland as there is no birth on freebmd?

Family Search 1911 entry for Glamorgan shows his birthplace as Birr - County Wexford.  His father was also born in Co Wexford around 1976/77

You are looking for people from 40yrs ago whose names are unknown and who may no longer be alive given that Nicholas was born in 1906

Although his father was born Ireland his mother was b Liverpool but no obvious marriage so presume it was in Ireland.

Nicholas was an only child in 1911 -  ?? female relatives

Yes it's a very long shot. He was born in County Wexford. The relatives would almost certainly be cousins. My gran has no information, other than she met them briefly at the funeral and that they were from Cardiff. The women concerned would probably be in their 70's or 80's now.

We've lost two lines of Whitty's, and have no contact with his mother's side (Connell/O'Connel/Connolly), other than those in Maesteg.

Hi mother was born in Liverpool, but the birth was never registered as her parents moved back to Ireland shortly after her birth.

I'm kind of pinning all my hope on someone else tracing their tree coming across this thread rather than someone on here being related if I'm entirely honest

Looks like there may have been another child born after the 1911 census

Births December qtr 1911
Mary K Whitty mmn Connell    Bridgend    11a   1744

There was also another Whitty birth in Bridgend in 1912 but mmn was O'Brien

There is a Mary K Whitty marriage in Cardiff 1955 which seems a long time after her birth

Have you thought of contacting local papers, and seeing if there might be something in their archives? Or, if they did a piece on your quest, someone or other might come forward with further clues, small or large that may lead you directly or indirectly to your families?
Even as late as the 1990s I know that a few local papers collected and published "lists" of the main mourners at some funerals. You may be lucky... worth a try.
Threlfall (Southport), Isherwood (lancs & Canada), Newbould + Topliss(Derby), Keating & Cummins (Ireland + lancs), Fisher, Strong& Casson (all Cumberland) & Downie & Bowie, Linlithgow area Scotland . Also interested in Leigh& Burrows,(Lancashire) Griffiths (Shropshire & lancs), Leaver (Lancs/Yorks) & Anderson(Cumberland and very elusive)

The Glamorgan Gazette is the local newspaper that might hold the answer. The microfilm is held at "Ty Ardd" The local family history library in Bridgend . Their telephone number is 01656 754810.
Ask for Bryn he is in charge . They will do a single look up free of charge. If he finds it he can e-mail it to you. Give them the date of the funeral and the other details. Their email is
 localandfamilyhistory@awen-wales.com

The Glamorgan Gazette has come out every Thursday for over 100 years .
