Possible marriage in India? How do I locate it?
« on: Monday 10 September 18 15:29 BST (UK) »
Hi all, new territories for me here so be gentle!

My gt gt grandfather, Nicholas Francis Whitty, committed bigamy during WW2. The only possible match in the UK GRO doesn't appear to be him.

Family rumour has it that the lady concerned may have been from India (where he served). Where do I even start looking?

I have no military records, can't find the court case, and there are no details in local papers that I can find. By all accounts the case was heard in London (we're in South Wales), and he served time in Wormwood Scrubs just after WW2

Have you tried Family Search?
You have to register, but it's free to use.
www.familysearch.org

The other option is Families In British India Society - FIBIS.
Try a search on their database at www.fibis.org

Hi

Have you tried the various sections of overseas births on the GRO index.  I think it’s on Ancestry now. Then you could send for the certificate. Not sure how detailed but it would give the place and you could try and get the church certificate or similar if there was one

My grandparents marriage in Bombay Cathedral appears in the index, though we were fortunate enough to have the certificate. A bit earlier. After WW1

Good luck

There is a 1945 marriage of a Nicholas F Whitty,  Folkestone
And a 1955 marriage in Bridgend, Glamorgan.

Which one of these is to your gg grandmother?

Added, and is he the 1988 or 1978 death? (If either)
Do you have a date of birth?
