James CULBERT, born 1832 Ireland (Belfast?)
« on: Monday 10 September 18 21:21 BST (UK) »
Hello,

The 1861 England Census has an entry for J. CULBERT, born 1832 Ireland, who appears to be a Gunner stationed at Plymouth Citadel (RG9/1445/109, p.5.) and may be the same person in the caption above.

Could anyone kindly help with information about his army service etc.

Thank you,

Am I missing something - I don't follow "in the caption above"??

The Gunner James Culbert of 3 Brigade at Plymouth in 1861 went to pension that same year, he was from Belfast.  There are no other records for him as far as I can see.  Not unusual, records were routinely destroyed when men ceased service.

MaxD,

"The caption above" refers to the post's headline "James CULBERT, born" etc.

I am a little confused, however, by his going to pension in 1861?   Does this mean that at age 29 he had served sufficient time to warrant a pension or had he been medically discharged?   The service aspect is quite important, because given his criminal background he could not have enlisted until at least December 1856.   I hope you can help on this point, even though I appreciate there are no other records.

Thank you for the moment,

Apart from the census record, the records that exist are simply records of the payment of pension, there is no background. They all have the start date of June 1861.
However, some of the payments as marked "temporary" and one "conditional" (the most common note is "permanent".

I don't know what the significance is of the two descriptions, I shall try to find out although there may well be an expert out there on 160 year old pension rules!

Thank you MaxD I very much appreciate your help.

Incidentally, Mr. CULBERT is proving quite elusive after 1856 anyway??

There's James Culbert in the 1861 Army Index. Gunner in the 3rd Brigade Royal Artillery. Reg number 409.
Possibly stationed at Plymouth at census time.
James Culbert 409 has a record in WO97
This guy could be Max's man, as he was discharged to pension in June 1861?
Says that he was born at Glenavy near Lisburn (so not Belfast, but not far away)
Servant by trade
Attested at Lisburn, 23 Dec 1854, age 19

jonw65,

Thank you for the details.    These effectively disqualify him from being the James CULBERT I am researching who was not released from Millbank Prison until 24/12/1856!!

Ah well.....the joys of genealogy.
