William Francis Gleed and Mary Bird (Byrne) married in India in the 1840s, and had seven children between 1843-1853. Of those children, I can find deaths (registered in Bombay) for Elizabeth Gleed (1843-1844) and William Francis Gleed (1845-1845). The mysterious thing is that, in the 1861 census, William and Mary are back in England with their youngest son Francis (b. 1853). That leaves four children unaccounted for:

Arthur Gleed (b. 1846, Ahmednagar, Bombay, Maharashtra, India)
William Francis Gleed (b. 1848, Ahmednagar, Bombay, Maharashtra, India)
Georgina Gleed (b. 1850, Bombay, India)
John Gleed (b. 1851, Bombay, India)

I'm assuming that these children probably died, but I'm up against a brick wall since I can't find any records either way (whether in India or in the UK). The family must have left India for England some time between 1853 and 1861.

Can anyone else find anything about the missing children? Thank you.

The registers for St Thomas Cathedral, Bombay show that John Gleed aged 2 was buried 11 Jul 1853 at Back Bay.

Did William Francis re-marry, as there is also a burial record on 8 Nov 1854 (died 7th November) at Ahmednuggur, Bombay for Mary Glede (sic) aged 27 wife of Quarter Master Serjeant Bombay Artillery

There is a probate record in 1882 for Arthur Gleed of 22 Council Street, Hulme, Manchester who died 19 Feb 1882 at Blackburn Infirmary.   Probate to Frank Gleed of the same address, brother & only next of kin.

Frank Gleed is on the 1881 census at that address, aged 31 & born Bombay, so presumably he is William Francis.  Looks like his death (as Frank) was registered in Chorlton in 1908, aged 59.

Added: 'Frank' married in 1880 as Francis, aged 26.

I'm puzzled by William, Mary & Francis on the 1861 census in Wednesbury, as I can't find a marriage to a second Mary and, in addition to Mary's burial in 1854 there is a burial in India in 1862 of William Gleed aged 49, pensioner on the military establishment.  ???

There is also a will/inventory of estate, confirming him as Quarter Sgt WF Gleed

Thank you so much to all for your help!

Jomot - that doubling does seem very odd indeed! I'm going to have to try and investigate that further...

It looks as though he was admitted to pension 3 Sep 1860 & his residence was shown as Bilston, Leicestershire, although in subsequent documents he was in the Birmingham area in 1860/61 and then returned to Bombay.  Added: The FIBIS site has the departure of a Mrs Gleed aboard the Minerva, 6 April 1862, for London, per the Times of India of 7 April.

For info, there is a newspaper article about an inquest into Arthur's death in the Bolton Evening News (and others) 22 Feb 1882.  It seems he was a labourer in the telegraph department of the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway & was loading material into the wagons at Lower Darwen, but after the wagons had been pushed along the track he was found beneath them with a serious head injury.  He died in the Blackburn Infirmary six weeks later, having never regained consciousness.
