French GGGGrandmother
« on: Wednesday 12 September 18 09:42 BST (UK) »
I along with other people with connections to the Herefordshire Lovetts are trying to trace my 3x ggrandmother who was French.
all we know about her is that she was called Clotilde we do not have a surname she married George Lovett from Hertfordshire, her death certificate shows she died in Hemel Hempstead and from her age at death we worked out she was born about 1802 in or around Calais in France, does anyone know anything or where to find french records my problem i myself do not understand or speak french, so would need a site that would translate into English.
With her first two sons being born in Calais they must have married their, they must have returned to England after the birth of Thomas my 2x ggrandfather because their other children were born in England.
Been trying without success for many years to break this brick wall.

Could you give us the birth year of the eldest child?  This would help to narrow down the search.

What does her death certificate say exactly?
Without her maiden name, it will be difficult to find out more.

You star!  If tacor1 can give the names of the children born in France it would help tie down a potential year for the marriage.

They got married in 1818 in Tilques (21/APR/1818)

My French is terribly rusty, but I can see that in 1818 George was 28 and a soldier.  So he might turn up on the Waterloo medal rolls.  This is getting interesting.

(I do like BMD documents which give a wealth of information).
