Is Microsoft Excel 2003 sufficient to open files ending with .xlsx
« on: Thursday 13 September 18 05:39 BST (UK) »
Hello All,

Actually two questions:
1. I tried to open an .xlsx file with Word. Now, when I download such a file, Word tries to open it and I can not read it. How can I stop this?
2. If I can persuade my computer to stop trying to use Word with such files is Excel 2003 modern enough to read these files.
Thank you

Mr Google says

Can Excel 2003 Open XLSX files?

Excel 2007 introduced the new xlsx format to the Office suite.

Opening these files in Excel 2003 often gave users an error message until they downloaded the compatibility tool.    :)  :)  :)  :)

Once the compatibility tool is downloaded, these files can be opened in Excel 2003. ... Click "File" on the menu bar, then click "Open."

Fingers crossed,

Thank you JM.

I will see how that works after Question 1 has an answer.

If you Right click on Icon, you should see the option to..   Open With,

from there you should have option to..  Open with Excel

then tick...  Always Use Excel  to open this type of file.

Thank you Hallmark,

I get two options:
Open File Location
or
Copy Full Path

I do hope I can get out of this hole I have dug.

If the compatibility tool doesn't work, you could try downloading a copy of Libreoffice. Calc will open .xlsx files and give you the option to save it as a file compatible with Excel before 2003.

But then downloading and installing something that large is a whole other technical maze you might have trouble with anway.

Jean,  if it helps,  I wonder if there's someone on the staff at your local public library who uses Excel as one of their tools, who perhaps could sort for you face to face so to write...  :)

Knew I had an Excel file somewhere....   ;D

This is what I get when I Right Click  on it

From there you'd have to choose  Microsoft Office   then    Excel
