I know he was the Paymaster for the Palestine Railways in the early 1920s, not sure what this means though.

Greetings, and a warm welcome to Rootschat.

As Paymaster, Thomas would have been responsible for the control and authorisation of expenditure (for all things, not just wages) for the Palestine Railways.  This was a UK Government owned organisation during the time the UK controlled Palestine.  He would have been the equivalent of a Chief Financial Officer of a private company.

I had the wrong Kitty there.  The one that Capt Crawford skippered was a Fishing Trawler ("FT" in the Navy lists):

KITTY, fishing trawler. Built 1897, 135grt, Aberdeen-reg A.819. Requisitioned by Admiralty in 1917 for Fishery Reserve, commissioned and flew white ensign; continued commercial fishing under naval control.

WFS is Warrant Fishery Skipper - I've amended my earlier post for this.

I'm beginning to wonder if there's more than one Thomas Crawford.

A career change from Fishery Skipper to Railway Paymaster seems unusual (although not impossible).  Maybe we need norm1055 to confirm the information sources.

You are right - I think I have been barking up the wrong tree with this one.

He was a soldier. Lovat Scouts first, then commissioned into the Royal Field Artillery in 1917.

Ah well, it was an interesting jouney through the navy lists chasing a red herring!

There's a quip to be made about fishery skippers and red herrings  ;D ;D ;D
