Vanishing Illings.
« on: Thursday 13 September 18 20:49 BST (UK) »
George Richard Illing was born in Woodstock in 1854 and his birth was registered in the 4th quarter.

On 2nd August 1888 he married Beatrice Ellen Gough at Woodstock.

In the 4th quarter of 1889 their daughter, Gladys Beatrice Illing, was born in Woodstock.

In the 4th quarter of 1896 he died (aged 42) in the St. Olave registration district.

I can find Beatrice and Gladys in 1901 and 1911. However, try as I might, I cannot find them in 1891, or George, for that matter.

On 27th September 1897 Gladys was enrolled at Cator Street School, Peckham. On 10th July 1899 she was enrolled at Choumert Road School, Southwark.

Apart from that I have no clues.

Can anyone help with their whereabouts in 1891 please ?

A good bet (though I've not spotted them yet) would be in St Saviour Southwark district - Edith Mary Illing, mmn Gough was born there 31 May 1891. She later enrolls at Maryon Park School Southwark alongside Gladys   - both father George, so looks to be correct - and the register says previous education was private. I don't see Edith again until 1939!

The 1881 Census RG11 897/68 p21 has: HM Prison, Chatham
George Richd Illing, single, 25, prisoner, born Oxfordshire, Woodstock

If this is your George, could have been incarcerated (or in a workhouse) in 1891?  Institutions sometimes recorded initials, not full names, so he would be difficult to find on a census.

Thank you Mabel and Philip.

Mabel, I had missed the school entry for Edith. I have now found baptism for Edith Mary in October 1891. At this point in time they were living in Fleming Road, Southwark.

Philip, the thought of a workhouse had crossed my mind but I don't think so. Edith was born in May 1891 and, as I said above, they were living in Fleming Road in October 1891.

I have scoured the census records, searching for all of them and I am still no further forward !
