Mary Murphy Birth Registration St George in the East
« on: Thursday 13 September 18 23:06 BST (UK) »
Found three baptisms of children born to Daniel Murphy and Bridget Murphy (Coffey)(Coffee) from the RC Church of St Mary and St Michael Commercial Road Stepney on FindMyPast.
Daniel Murphy   born 6/7/1857  baptised 26/7/1857  Parents Danielis Murphy and Birgitta Murphy (Coffee)
Marie Murphy  born 22/11/1859  baptised 27/11/1859  Parents Danielis Murphy and Brigida Murphy (Coffee)
Julia Murphy  born 23/1/1862  baptised 2/3/1862  Parents Danielis Murphy and Bridgittae Coffey

I have the birth certificates from GRO (Registration District St George in the East) for Daniel and Julia.

Daniel Murphy   birth 6/7/1857  registered 10/8/1857  Father Daniel Murphy  Mother Bridget Murphy formerly Coffee

Julia Murphy born 23/1/1862  registered 6/3/1862 Father Daniel Murphy  Mother Bridget Murphy formerly Coffee.

I have not been able to find a birth registration for Mary/Marie/Maria.

Can anyone help?

Janet

Welcome to RootsChat! ;D

Maybe Maria's birth wasn't registered?

It didn't become compulsory to register a birth until the 1870's.
Until then the onus was on the Registrar to find births to register.

Hi, and again welcome to rootschat,
Whilst I too can't find a gro ref for Mary/Marie are you aware they possibly had further children in Whitechaple. Jeremiah-1869, Johanna-1875. There's also a chance of a John born 1860 mmn Coffee in Birmingham.

Thanks for the welcome.  It amazes me that her brother and sister on either side of her birth year were registered and she wasn't.

You were right about there being other siblings Jeremiah and Julia.

Behind my question was the search for my great grandmother and her sister's family.  Their names are Bridget and Kate Murphy.  According to both their marriage certificates in Australia, their parents were Daniel Murphy and Bridget Coffey and both were born in Middlesex, England.

I have the marriage certificate of a Daniel Murphy and Bridget Coffey in Whitechapel in 1856. Roman Catholic.  Children of this union (?) and source of this info -
1857 - Daniel baptism and birth certificate (St George in the East)
1859 - Mary baptism (St George in the East)
1861 Census - Daniel and Bridget only
1862 - Julia baptism and birth certificate (St George in the East)
1866-1868 - Bridget marriage and death certificates born 1868/immigration record born 1866/GRO registration ?
1869 - Jeremiah birth certificate (Whitechapel)
1871 Census - Daniel, Bridget, Mary, Bridget and Jeremiah
1873 -1876 - Kate marriage certificate born 1876/death certificate born 1873/birth certificate of first child born 1875/immigration record born 1876/GRO registration ?
1875 - Johanna birth certificate (Whitechapel)

I have been unable to find birth registraitons for Mary, Bridget and Kate.

By the 1881 Census the family had fallen on hard times and it looks as if the surviving children went to different Roman Catholic institutions until they made their own way in the world.

Can you help?
Cheers
Janet

One thought, could Johanna be Kate?
Do you have Johanna anywhere else?
