7a Lewis Flats, Chelsea, London 1st May 1931
« on: Friday 14 September 18 14:37 BST (UK) »
Dear All,

From an incoming passenger list of a ship that arrived in England on 1st May 1931 from the USA, I have an address that the passenger was heading for namely 7a Lewis Flats, Chelsea, London.

The passengers surname was Audley and other information suggests that she was heading for her grandparents at this address.

Can anybody please tell me who was living at 7a Lewis Flats, Chelsea, London on 1st May 1931

Thanks in anticipation of your help

The 1923 electoral register shows the flats as Lewis Trust Buildings and the Blocks are listed as A, B, C etc so presumably it was No 7 in Block A.  (William & Gertrude Beckman were there in 1923)

ADDED Still there in 1927

I see there's another Audley arrival (21 December 1931) with a UK address of 48a Lewis Flats, Chelsea ( a Smith family per the 1931 and 1932 voters lists).

Hi All,
Many thanks for all your replies.

Milliepede asks about her grandparents names
I have no idea of the names of her grandparents if they were her fathers parents their surname would be Audley if they were her mothers parents I do not have a clue to their names.

All I know is that she (Shirley Audley) sailed as an unaccompanied minor aged 8 months from the USA to England in the charge of the Nurse (part of the ships crew) aboard the ship.  The information, has been given to me by a relative of the Nurse, which is backed up by a newspaper article.  I think that Shirley Phyllis Maria Audley (to give her, her full name) was born in Cleveland Ohio. I don't even know the names of her parents.

To me to sail across the Atlantic as an unaccompanied minor aged 8 months is a bit of an adventure and as my Surname is Audley this event just has to be  investigated further.

The only thing I have managed to find is Shirley's destination when she arrived in England.

Assuming that her grandparents surname was Jennings I now need to find a Jennings/ Audley marriage either in England or the USA.
