John Cornish Emigration
« on: Friday 14 September 18 18:40 BST (UK) »
Hello, I have been unable to find the shipping records for a family that emigrated to Australia from England in the 1860s.

John Cornish born 1835 Cornwall, died Victoria 1934
His wife Louisa Bath born 1839 Cornwall, died Victoria 1924
3 sons all born in Cornwall:
William John 1859
Thomas 1862
Henry John 1864

The family all arrived in Victoria, Louisa went on to have another 10 children commencing with Richard born in Cambrian Hills, Victoria in 1866, therefore the family should have arrived in Australia 1864-66, but so far have been unable to locate them on any shipping records.

Any help greatly appreciated, thank you

There are no records for shipping & passengers in the UK before 1890.

Nearly all of the earlier records simply weren't kept, or destroyed.

But diseymary is looking for outgoing passenger lists, no?
I can't see the family on any lists so far :(

So frustrating, there must surely be a mistranscription

I presume you’ve looked at https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/2778600

There is a John Cornish of right age travelling with apparently another John who is 21 in 1862. Both miners.  I wondered about the idea your John came ahead and the rest of the family followed (even though that would make the birth of the youngest in England a bit suspect)  but I don’t see them either.

My statement applies to both incoming Passenger Lists and outgoing Passenger Lists.
The Board of Trade at the time didn't keep them.

Understood, but I was referring to the passenger lists of immigrants kept by Australia.

He arrived with a group of Cornish miners:

“Mr JOHN CORNISH, of Sebastopol Ballarat, who reached Victoria with a band of Cornish miners, nearly 70 years ago. died last night. He was in his 99th year, and was the oldest Methodist in the Ballarat district. When he retired from mining, many years ago, Mr Cornish took up farming. He left a grown-up family, four members of which reside In Northcote — Mrs W. Gribble and Messrs Henry, Albert and Frederick Cornish.” http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article243100068

He died in August 1934, and the notice says ‘almost 70 years ago’, so post August 1864.

Do look at SA immigration also.

Thanks everyone for all the responses.

I have previously studied the PROV (Public Records of Victoria) shipping records for assisted and unassisted passengers to Australia and also the Western Australian records as this was often a first drop-off port, I think I have looked at South Australian records as well, but with this informative newspaper article I will study the SA records again.

Many thanks,
Cheers
