George Turner who Buried 4 Wives & Reputed Father of 47 Children!
« on: Saturday 15 September 18 18:10 BST (UK) »
Hello

Found this in the Stamford Mercury, 28th January 1785

A few days since died, near Maidstone, in the 74th year of his age, Mr George Turner: He had buried four wives, by all of whom he had issue, and was the reputed father of 47 children.

Couldn't have been much of a life for his poor Wives!

He must either have been wealthy or needed several jobs too.

Mark

It does not say that all of the children were born to his 4 wives

Depending on when his 1st & last were born that's an average of more than 1 child per yr  :o

It would be interesting to know more about him although I'm glad I'm not a descendant!

"He created his own workforce"  ;D

"He had buried four wives, by all of whom he had issue, and was the reputed father of 47 children"

Was the 'reputed father' over & above the 'issue' with his wives  ???

I'd like to know his occ. or what he had to attract the women  ::)

Hello

One of my Grandfather's Brothers, or should I say Wife bore him 13 children! I recall Fred with a sparkle in his eye and accounts of his Railway career (mostly forgotten), when he came and stayed with his Sister, my Great Aunt!

He was a 'Top Link' steam locomotive driver and worked two shifts for the London Midland Scottish Railway.

A Signalling failure allowed two locomotives to collide head on, his Fireman and the Driver and Fireman of the other locomotive were killed. Fred was unconscious for 6 weeks and after hospital went away to convalesce, then had to work his way back up to a 'Top Link' driver.

He was a proud friendly man and one of Drivers nominated to drive the Royal Train, although the Train was unlikely to ever use the routes he was usually qualified for.

He told me that the LMS employed a chap that went round with a pole and tapped the bedroom windows  ;) of their employees starting early, to wake them up!

My Great Aunt who died at 95 told me their children were well turned out and shoes always polished, apparently his first job home from work - the SHOES of the younger children and check the others!  ;D

Added: Only seen reference to 'issue' in Wills and in John or Bernard Burke's Genealogical works.

"Issue" means a person's lineal genetic descendants

Issue can also mean offspring, and children, as well as descendants.

Nowadays he could claim thousands on the family allowance and take lie detector tests on The Jeremy Kyle Show!

The musically-minded will have heard of the early 19th-century composer Ignaz Pleyel, who apparently was the 24th son of a schoolmaster who died aged 99 after two marriages and 39 children.

One way of achieving immortality (or notoriety) I suppose ....
