Sydney Bowthorpe GOOK
« on: Saturday 15 September 18 19:44 BST (UK) »
Sydney GOOK was born circa 1895 as illegitimate son of William Bowthorpe and Mary Gook. In 1919 he sailed from France to Canada as a farm labourer and in 1922 was married to Agnes Oram in Toronto.  I am looking for his death. Can anybody help please.

I think this is the right man. Reading through the papers , his name is Sydney Bowthorpe Gook. He variously gives next of kin as father . William Bowthorpe Gook, step father William Bowthorpe and Mrs C Bowthorpe of 5 Long Row , New Catton , Norwich - the address of Charles Bowthorpe and family.

I think that the date on the war record was a typing error as it does give his age as 21 which equates with him being born in 1894/5. I found it very interesting to read. I also found him in 1935 with his wife and assumed it was the right man.

I also found him in 1935 with his wife and assumed it was the right man.

The address for the above was 152 Oakcrest Ave.  He had the same address when wife Agnes passed away on 16 Oct 1938.

Looking through the old Toronto directories found at https://www.torontopubliclibrary.ca/history-genealogy/lh-digital-city-directories.jsp :

1941
Sydney living at 66 Oakcrest Ave
Living at 152 Oakcrest is Ernie Gook

1942
Sydney back at 152 Oakcrest and Ernest at 28 Oak Park Ave

1943
page folded blocking the names, but don't see oakcrest, although I can see Ernie's occupation, so I don't think Sydney is listed.

1944 only Ernie is listed.

A long shot, but wife Agnes is buried at http://www.stjohnsnorwaycemetery.ca/  They do answer genealogical requests, so it might be worth asking if Sydney is buried with her.  At the bottom of the link is an email address for genealogical requests.

There is a Sydney Gook listed at deceasedonline.com (just in case he took a trip to the UK and died there):
Last name Gook
first names Sydney
Cremation date 07 December 1960
Location Lancashire
You would have to register, and cost of viewing the cremation document (which has his address etc) is £2.00

I wonder who Ernest Gook was. Sydney had a brother Ernest but he was killed in WW1. Would this Ernest have been a son?

I think Ernie could have been a son, as looking through random directories and voter lists, there was an Ernie up to at least the 1990's.  Canada has strict privacy rules for anyone that could be living, so there would be no birth records to check with.
