Farlam Family Help Needed
« on: Sunday 16 September 18 00:55 BST (UK) »
Hi Guys

I keep revisiting a brick wall, and am hoping someone can help as I am currently frustrated and confused !

My 3 x great grandfather John Hardy was born abt 1804 in Haltwhistle.  He married Elizabeth Smith on 24 May/Aug 1822 in Farlam (brides parish was given as Brampton).  Died 1856 in Gateshead.
I have John and his family on the 1841 and 1851 census returns and traced the children  & families all back from there.
I would like to go back from John however, but though have some "best guesses" I don't have any confirmed names of his parents :-(.

My best guesses at the moment are that his parents are Thomas Hardy (b. 1776 Cumberland) and Hannah Graham (who is a whole different story in itself as there seems to be 2 Hannah Grahams) who Thomas married 9 Nov 1801 in Farlam.  It is possible that 8 younger siblings BUT those possible siblings were all born in Farlam, not Haltwhistle and I have baptisms for them.  I do NOT have a baptism for my John and can't seem to find one which fits.

So, going back to the marriage of John and Elizabeth....is it possible that any of you are able to actually look at the source of the marriage I have found, to see if a fathers name is given for either of them ?

Fingers crossed :-)

Hi Victoria

I’ll check the Parish record for you at Cumbria Archives. Probably be next week.

I think you have the right man, but I don't think he dies in 1856.

In 1851 the Hardy family are living in Whickham. Two pages away is a widowed Ann Taylor, 48, b. Whickham, with a 10 year old son Peter, b. Whickham.

There is a death of an Elizabeth Hardy, age 51, abode Whickham in June qtr 1851.

There is a marriage of a John Hardy in Newcastle June qtr 1852, one of 2 possible brides is an Ann Taylor.

1861 census, Wood Houses, Crook and Billy Row,
John Hardy, 58, Brick Manufacturer, b. Brampton,
Ann Hardy, wife, 58, b. Whickham,
Peter Taylor, son in law, unm, 20, Brick Manufacturer, b. Whickham,
Mary A. Hardy, niece, 12, b. Brampton,
RG9/3715/5/4

1871 census, Tow Law,
John Hardy, head, 68, Engineman Colliery, b. Farlam, Cumberland,
Ann Hardy, wife, 68, b. Whickham,
RG10/4953/42/4

1881 census, 35 Joiceys Tce West, Oxhill, Kyo,
Henry Hardy, 36, Coal Miner, b. Farlam, Cumberland,
Hannah ", wife, 35, b. Farlam, Cumberland,
Robert ", son, 4, b. Kyo, Durham,
Mary A. ", dau, 1, b. Kyo, Durham,
John ", uncle, wid, 78, Retired Brick Maker, b. Farlam, Cumberland,
Hannah ", mother, unm, 58, b. Farlam, Cumberland,
Thomas ", brother, unm, 24, Coal Miner, b. Farlam, Cumberland,
RG11/4943/35/8

Henry Hardy is a grandson of Thomas and Hannah Hardy, living with them in Farlam in 1851 and 61.

John Hardy marriage cert to Ann Taylor should confirm his fathers name.

Thank you Trish & Alan for looking at this for me.

Alan - I will have a more detailed look at the family you have found, and as you say, get the marriage cert (so glad for the pdf trial....makes it so much quicker to get it to NZ!!).  I do remember seeing the 1881 return before but couldn't see how it fit in.  I'll look a bit closer !

Cheers

Hi Victoria

I've checked the Farlam parish records for the marriage between John Hardy and Elizabeth Smith.  The marriage took place on 24th August 1822 and was by banns. There were no parents listed on the entry.  Elizabeth was from Brampton.  John signed his name and Elizabeth made her mark.
(The witnesses were John and Elizabeth Hardy - but I think need to check this again!!)
