Mary Isabella Hetherington
« on: Sunday 16 September 18 08:13 BST (UK) »
I am trying to trace the above.

Mary lived in Gateshead UK and had a son Arthur Edwin Hetherington 15/8/1916. Arthur was adopted as a baby by John Wallace and Mary Isabella Wallace nee Robson as a baby and was raised under the name of Joseph Wallace. He only found out about his adoption when he registered to marry in 1944. There is a possibility he met and knew his birth mother but would never speak of it.

Joseph died in 1989.

Mary Isabella Hetherington gave her address as 60 Kelvin Grove, Gateshead on the birth certificate and advised her occupation as A Nurse - Domestic. There is no father recorded on the certificate however it seems he was in the Army and died in the Somme before being able to marry Mary. From that I assume Mary was in her early 20's when Arthur/Joseph was born.

I am not sure whether the adoption was formal as it appears Mary Isabella Hetherington was a family friend - of exactly whom I do not know. I would think it will be unlikely I would be able to obtain the adoption papers even if it was formal.

I have been unable to identify Mary Isabella Hetherington nor the father.

This one is a bit different and any guidance will be appreciated.

Regards

Chris

EDITED - ignore this.  rosie99's find eliminates this one

A possibility:
Marriage Jun qtr 1883 Tynemouth vol 10b p336 HETHERINGTON Arthur, GALLON Eleanor
Birth Jun qtr 1893 South Shields vol 10a p858 HETHERINGTON Mary Isabella mmn GALLON

(there may be others, but this one is local and with the right forenames).

Philip

ADDED - siblings John Gallon 1884, Robert 1889, Jane 1895, Arthur 1897, Eleanor 1899, ?Arthur 1905 (all South Shields)

Have you tried looking for 60 Kelvin Grove on the 1911 as there is a Mary resident there then  ;D

Dammit!  Parents Edwin and Jane knock out the HETHERINGTON/GALLON family.  :(

Marriage Sep qtr 1886 Brampton, Cumberland vol 10b p581 HETHERINGTON Edwin, SHORT Jane (fits with 24 yrs married and Edwin's birthplace on 1911 census)
Birth Dec qtr 1892 Gateshead vol 10a p871 HETHERINGTON Mary mmn SHORT

Philip

Thank you both for your efforts.

Family found.

I thought I had checked every combination of names I could think of - missed Edwin somehow.

Strange the Wallace family took Arthur and they had been married under two years?

Johns middle name was Joseph.

Legal adoption wasn't until 1927.

Possible death: Mary Hetherington aged 27, Jun qtr 1920 Gateshead 10a 1205.

Perhaps she had been ill in some way and couldn’t look after her son? Was he definitely taken in by the Wallaces soon after his birth, or might it have been around the time of his mother’s death?

Great find - so definitely the right Mary, confirmed by her address.  She was “just” Mary at birth and death, no middle name, so I wonder why she was Mary Isabella on her son’s birth registration and whether it is mere coincidence that those were the names of his adoptive mother.

Arthur/James would have been not yet 4 years old when Mary died (she was buried on 23 June 1920) so it’s unlikely he had any memories of her even if he did know her in his early years.  Her death certificate may be of interest as to the cause of death.  However it’s unlikely there will be any documentation about the arrangements made for the upbringing of her child.
