Help please with occupation in 1762 militia list
« on: Sunday 16 September 18 08:53 BST (UK) »
Hello

https://communities.northumberland.gov.uk/008635FS.htm

I would be grateful for help with the occupation for James Harragate, who is listed under Rock Constabulary. The first letter is D, then there is an insertion, possibly of an r? Or a vowel? Then what comes next? Then _ kilman.

Overall it looks like Drawkilman but I have not been able to find any thing along these lines in lists of old occupations. I have a feeling I am missing the obvious - happy to have this pointed out to me!

Many thanks

GS

it does look like Drawkilman, but I wonder if it should be "kilNman"?

Drawer Kilnman?

Drawer: either a mining industry worker who moved mining carts, or a machine operator producing wire to make it suitable for use in the clock and watchmaking industries.

I have no idea if that is correct, or if it even makes sense as an occupation.  :)

I wonder if it might be something like this. (It's from the Dictionary of Occupational Terms which is of a considerably later date than the extract you're interested in)

drawer, kiln drawer (bricks, etc.) ; taker-out (bricks)
removes "burnt," i.e. fired articles from kilns after they have been cooled to required temperature often done by burner (q.v.).

Thanks very much Ruskin and JenB. I think I was too focussed on agricultural occupations. Much appreciated.
