Payne, Roland - Otley
« on: Sunday 16 September 18 12:09 BST (UK) »
Could some kind person help me with Roland Payne, born Otley in 1885. I have lost him after the 1901 census, when he was living with his parents, in Otley. Have been through the 1911 census, the BMDs to see if he had died. Someone said he may have married Christine G Watson about 1917. Any help would be most appreciated.

Thank you Lizzie. I had seen the death notice, had been confused by information that said he married Christine G Watson (1886 - 1952) with no marriage date. Two children, Winifred M born 1916, Margaret E born 1918. They could have been born anywhere in the U.K., as it was tradition that on their deaths they were buried in Otley.

Have you tried to find the family on 1939 register?
Have you found birth registrations for the two children?

Hi Lance

Roland Payne of Duncorval Homestead Estate, Menston died 31 December 1959.

Found these snippets in the Papers.

The Engagement is announced between Donald William only Son of Mr and Mrs Thomas Stell of “Westfield” Keighley and Winifred Mary elder Daughter of Mr and Mrs Ronald Payne of “Duncorval” Burley in Wharfedale.

Yorkshire Post and Leeds Intelligencer 24 Sept 1949
The Engagement is announced between Ronald Owen Smith Son of the late Mr P A and Mrs Smith of Edgware Middlesex and Margaret Elizabeth younger daughter of Mr and Mrs Roland Payne of “Duncorval”, Burley in Wharfedale.

Yorkshire Post and Leeds Intelligencer 14 Feb 1952
Feb 12 1952 at “Duncorval”, Burley in Wharfedale, aged 66 Christina Gillespie dearly loved wife of Roland Payne, Service at Otley Parish Church (Friday) 11a.m. prior to Interment at Otley Cemetery.

There is also an interesting write up of Roland’s Uncle William David Payne who died at his Residence “Oakfield” Burley in 1907 and the family’s close association with the Printing Machine Industry.  David Payne, it says, was the Inventor of the Wharfedale Printing Machine.

Happy Hunting
Lynn

Thank you so much, this is spot on. I had thought that perhaps Scotland could be involved, as emigration did not tick any of the boxes. The Payne family did become famous for their printing business, established in Otley and details can be found today, at the Otley museum. Many of the male Paynes were to become printing engineers.
