Green Margaret 1836 Code of Conduct
« on: Sunday 16 September 18 12:38 BST (UK) »
Hello
I am hoping somebody will be able to assist with this project. My daughter is creating a bonnet for her embroidery guild commemorating women transported from Scotland to Australia and Van Diemen's Land in the 1830's. Her chosen convict is Margaret Green who was convicted at Perth in 1836 for theft from Longforgan Perthshire.  I have managed to find her Code of Conduct but we are struggling to decipher the script.  Can someone have a look at the file and if its not too much effort have a go at transcribing to plain text.

She would be really grateful for any assistance,
Many thanks in advance
Regards
Mark W

I see she had her ticket of leave suspended twice for misbehaving.

Wow, she is so appreciative for the link, its exactly what she was after.  Feisty indeed, but Dundee women are not known for being shy and retiring.. from reading it would appear drink was an issue...

many thanks to all

So pleased it was helpful.  A feisty lady indeed. It sounds like a fascinating project,so many stories to be told.  Hope the bonnet is successfully completed.

Is it any wonder the poor woman turned to drink.  No doubt her thieving was a means to make ends meet - a ham and a pair of trousers are not things that a hardened criminal would be going after.  And then the transportation; I too would drown my sorrows in drink under such circumstances.

Is this the same lady?  May help with transcription.

This has a facility for illustrating their faces. It would be interesting to see people's ideas of her appearance. I imagine a red nose and bloodshot eyes.  Her hands would be red and chapped from all the hours she spent at the wash-tub as punishment.
Some of the other female convicts I looked at were also punished for drunkenness and absence without leave.

Rev. William Bernard Ullithorne went to Australia as a missionary around the time Margaret Green was transported. His experiences made him an advocate for abolition of transportation. He was a witness to a Parliamentary committee of inquiry. He later became 1st Catholic bishop of Birmingham. (I have a distant connection to an Ullithorne family.)
