One of the Dubliners (band) as he puts it is "gifted with an older brother's name", think I remember that correctly.

Yes I do have the Mother in the 1911 Census she is Widowed by then, says she had 8 liveborn children, 4 still living at time of Census, I have only managed to identify 5 (or maybe 6) so far.
She was married in 1862, so I am assuming that probably 2 children could have been born before civil registration...

Somehow I didn't have my mind open to there actually being 2 children and the first dying.. I will pursue that avenue..
Thanks

It was 2nd Johanna of 3 consecutive ones. Possibly a mistake?

I have at least two families who named the next child  of the same sex after the one who had just died. In both cases, it was in the 1840's, one in England and one in Scotland, so it would appear a fairly common practice at that time.

My grandfather was named after an older brother who died, this was in Australia in 1878.  His parents came from Somerset.  Fortunately for me they had different middle names, so made it a bit easier.  It was my 2 X great grandfathers name, so I guess they wanted to continue it.
James -Victoria, Australia originally from Keynsham, Somerset.
Janes - Keynsham and Bristol area.
Heale/Hale - Keynsham, Somerset
Vincent - Illogan/Redruth, Cornwall.  Moved to Sculcoates, Yorkshire; Grass Valley, California; Timaru, New Zealand and Victoria, Australia.
Williams somewhere in Wales - he kept moving
Ellis - Anglesey

My GF's children by 1st wife included a daughter and a son who both died young. GF named them after his parents. The names were used again for children of 2nd marriage. I didn't know they had existed until I began researching my family.
