Kings Certificate and Badge
« on: Monday 17 September 18 12:28 BST (UK) »
Hi Listers

Wonder if anyone could help me on this

A solider I am researching was discharged being unfit for war service in 1917 as he had emphysema.  He received the usual badge and Kings Certificate and in brackets its says "With Thanks" - what is the relevance of the "with thanks", was there so many commendations or such like that went with the certificate and was "with thanks" was one of them?

Many thanks

Margaret

Where does the "with thanks" appear?  Presumably by "the usual badge" you mean the Silver War Badge?

Hi MaxD

Yes did mean the Silver Badge - I don't have the certificate itself but the "With thanks" is recorded on attached form, that is part of his Army Pension Records.

Looking around trying to find out the reason - a fair few people have recorded that their family member received a With Thanks on the Kings Cert - so just wondered why/what it meant.

I haven't seen an example of the actual certificate with "with thanks" on it.  I would suggest this is a nice gesture by the clerk who wrote out the chit adding his/her thanks for his service.   May be wrong but I would like to see an example of the actual cert so annotated.

No - I googled some images and couldn't find any that had with thanks on them - which was why I wondered about it - I suspected that it might have been, as you say, as kindly clerk, which actually is a lovely thought that someone took that trouble.

Thanks MaxD - your thoughts are much appreciated

It looks to me that J.T.Pemberton has written it as this is the receipt. So he's saying he's received it "with thanks" (Both "T"'s are in the same hand).

Jim is, as usual, far more astute than I, he is absolutely right!

Thank you both Max and Jim - as always you insight and help has been really useful.  I am researching into a few soliders from WWI for a public talk and display, who were all students at the Cheshire County Training College so will more than likely be back for more help soon!!  ;D
