Can't find the barker family.
« on: Monday 17 September 18 16:25 BST (UK) »

I'm trying to find any details of the Barker family on the 1871 and 1881 censuses. I've searched for the last ten days and can only find BMD's for the family in the north of England.

Annie born 1882 and Catherine Barker born in 1883 in Manchester first appear on the 1891 census living with their brother Thomas and his family in St Michael's Parish. Thomas says he's 24 and born in Sheffield. I found Catherine on the 1901 census living with her older sister Elizabeth Hawksworth and her family in Ancoats. Elizabeth was born in Bradford, Yorkshire in 1874.

The problem is I can't find Thomas and Elizabeth on earlier censuses. I suspect that their parents were William Barker and Ann Burton. According to the GRO records all the children have the same MMN Burton. I then found a marriage for a William Barker to Ann Burton in the 4th quarter 1868 in Bradford, Yorks almost two years after Thomas was baptised.

Would some kind person please see if they can find them on the censuses for me?

Stupid question, but do you have any of the children's birth certificates to verify your theory that they are the children of William and Ann?

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

So, Thomas Barker married Margaret Ann Connolly at The Cathedral, Manchester on 28 November 1887.  Thomas and his father William (deceased) have the occupation of Hawker.  Margaret's father is William, a Watchman.  Thomas is 19 and Margaret is 18.

Thanks everyone for replying so quickly.

I haven't got the BC's but I found Thomas' Baptism on familysearch and that is what gave me an idea about his parents names. I don't want to commit myself to buying the certs until I know a lot more details.
