William Serjeant - Burial at Caister 1912 - a graveyard plan?
« on: Monday 17 September 18 17:30 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone

I’ve found burial details, including grave number, cemetery section etc of William Serjeant.  He was buried at Caister on the 3rd December 1912, he was 60 years old.

He lived in London but died in Yarmouth so was buried there.

I was wondering if anyone knew where I could get hold of a cemetery plan so I can locate his grave and also to see whether his grave had a headstone?

The details are:

His grave details are as follows;

Burial Cemetery at Caister, Great Yarmouth
Burial Date  3 December 1912
William Serjeant
Age 60
Cemetery Section D
Grave Number 962
Consecrated
Death Place. 17 Regent Road

Any help or advice is much appreciated.  Thank you  :)

Have you contacted the council to see if a plan is available

Hi
Thank you for your reply.
I contacted them to say I had all the details and all I wanted was a plan of the cemetery.  Their response was I had to pay a fee of around £40 so they could do the search, but I’ve already done the search.
I was abit confused why they just couldn’t send a plan, as my local council had no problems in sending me the cemetery plan of my local cemetery.
I was hoping that maybe someone on the lovely rootschat may happen to have a copy (keeping my fingers crossed) just to describe where his grave would be.

It might be worth trying the Norfolk Family History Society to see if they could help. (They have a "contact us" button on their homepage).

Oh that’s definitely worth a try, thank you so much.  I never thought of a family history society.

According to the Find a Grave web site, there are 4 cemeteries in Caister on Sea

Thank you,
I was presuming it was the one at Ormesby Road, I didn’t realise there were a few.
Oh dear, this is probably going to be more complicated than I thought  :(

Came across this thread while googling for cemetery plans of Caister and Gorleston, so thought I'd register to offer assistance. Your William is probably buried in Caister Old Cemetery which was used for Yarmouth burials from around 1906. I was unable to find any plans of the cemeteries online but  the Cemeteries in Yarmouth have information boards at their entrances which show the location of the lettered areas if not the grave numbers which at least narrows done the search a bit. I am taking a bit of a guess but assume the Caister ones have something similar. If you register on "Find a Grave" and post a photo request for Caister Cemetery including William's burial details that you have I am more than happy to go and have a look for you when I have the time and post some photo's online there if I find the grave.

Hello

Thank you for your reply and for your offer of assistance, that’s very kind of you.
I’ve recently had a reply from Great Yarmouth Borough Council and they were extremely helpful in that they sent me the grave details, I was so happy.
I don’t think there is a headstone which is a shame.  It’s definitely Caister Old Cemetery in Area D Grave number 962.  They said there will be a groundsman around to help locate the area, unfortunately I can’t make it to Norfolk/Suffolk until sometime next year.
That would be very kind of you, I’d really appreciate it, thank you so much.  I’ll take a look at ‘Find a Grave’ and look into registering.
Thank you once again,
Heidi
