Pencher Staiths, Durham, England
« on: Monday 17 September 18 22:14 BST (UK) »
One of my ancestors was born in Sunderland and he is listed as such
However on the 1871 census his wife and all his children were listed as being born at Pencher Staiths,
or Fencher Staiths which I am supposing is in Durham.

I cannot locate any place called that but I did find a place called Dunston Staithe just across the river from New Castle

If some one has to see the census it is the 1871 Durham Newbottle
John Dodd Age 56    Mariner Sunderland  and his wife Ellen 53 born in the above place along with their three children

Any help appreciated.

Thank you

You may also find Penshaw written as  Painshaw or Pensher.

I think that this is the family in 1841 Address Painshaw Staiths

John Dodds 25  Cooper
Eleanor Dodds 20
Thos Dodds 1
Elizabeth Dodds 1mo
Mary Cully 25 FS

There are some transcripts of parish records for Penshaw on Freereg.

Here is a baptism for Thomas Dodds
Born  24 June1839
Baptised 27 Nov 1842
Father John Dodds
Mother Eleanor Cully
Abode Penshaw Staiths
Father's  occupation Cooper

A brother called John George was baptised on the same day.

Also worth noting that the Bt's for Penshaw can be viewed on Familysearch

Looking at the groindexes (the births are recorded in Houghton le Spring RD) mother's surname is given as Cowley - for some siblings as Coulley.

This may be  the marriage of John Dodds and Eleanor Cowley 17 Oct 1836 Gateshead Fell.

The family appear to be in Penshaw Staiths in 1851- John is still recorded as a cooper but also a licensed victualler. In 1861 they are  still in Penshaw, address given as Blacking Factory.John is now a coal miner

Assuming that this is the correct family(and the names  of children and places of birth would suggest that it is) I do wonder about the occupation given for John in the  1871 census.
